For Immediate Release August 15, 2008
Contacts: Jenny Evans 343-7103 CITY, ICELAND AMERICA ENERGY EXPLORE GEOTHERMAL ENERGY MOU signed to research feasibility of geothermal resources in Anchorage and vicinity
In an effort to use more renewable energy in Alaska, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich and Magnús Jóhannesson, CEO of Iceland America Energy (IAE), today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the feasibility of using geothermal resources to provide cost-efficient heating and electricity generation for Anchorage.
“Alaska has some of the most promising geothermal reservoirs in the world. With skyrocketing energy prices, we need to continue to look to renewable and sustainable sources of energy,” Mayor Begich said at a news conference at the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility headquarters. “Not only is geothermal a cleaner source of energy, it has the potential to lower the cost of home heating and electricity for ratepayers.”
Mayor Begich was joined at the signing by Jóhannesson and other Iceland America Energy officials. IAE is an alternative energy development company, with the primary mission of developing geothermal and hydroelectric projects in North America. IAE brings over 70 years of experience in geothermal district heating and electrical generation through its shareholders. |
